Ergh, maybe I won’t be going back to Subway.

I talked to the manager today and he said the only shift he could offer me was “six o’clock to midnight.” 😮 MIDNIGHT?! Luckily, there is a nightbus which runs every half-hour, but if I don’t get out of there in time, I might be better off just walking home. Even though this place is only seven blocks from my house, and I can walk there in fifteen or twenty minutes—but walking by myself, at midnight, is a prospect I really don’t look forward to.

Arrgh. Oh, and it’s on the weekends, which is something I wouldn’t be able to keep up during the school year, and my major goal is to find a job not just for the summer, but throughout the year as well.

Complicating the problem is that no one else has called back yet. Well, it’s more and more applying, I guess, a bit of calling, and–if I’m desperate–I guess I could take the job. :tensed: (Despite all I say, he did seem keen on hiring someone for that position.) I would really rather not, though, for more reasons than one.

The manager/owner has a very heavy East Indian accent. Or maybe my hearing’s just bad; in either case, I have a tough time understanding him sometimes.

There are washrooms, even though this Subway is even smaller than the last one I worked at. I kid you not. What you see is what you get in that place. Washrooms = me washing them. 😥

On the other hand, my memory is fairly good; I could rattle off (with hesitation) the formulas for several sandwiches. Unfortunately, when I made a sandwich (he wanted to see how much training I’d need) I forgot it was Tuesday and that there was a special. 🙁

He kept reiterating how “nothing much had changed.” I’ll say. Same touchscreen, same formulas… only one new bread, but they got rid of my favourite. Alas!

I think I may end up going back to Subway this summer 😥 That would be slightly depressing, but at least I would have a job. No one has called me back yet, and my first round of resume-dropping was Friday. Pity, and one manager even said that their sister store in the mall was kind of desperate for people… but apparently not desperate enough that they’d hire me.

Worst realization today? Even employers like Subway like to see experience. I ask you, how much lower on the job ladder can you get than fast food? BLAH! And how will I ever get a job in non-clothing retail (which admittedly narrows my choices a lot) at this rate?

On the other hand, let it never be said that the CIBC branch on campus has bad service. The lineup was so long they started handing out cookies and apologizing profusely. They were chocolate chip cookies, too.

And now for some quizzes, because those things make me happy. My mood needs picking up because I’m -sniff- starting MATH 200 tomorrow. I looked at the outline and I panicked. A lot of it looks vaguely familiar and scary.

Why do I feel like I’ve written my Physics exam already?

Oh yes, that’s right, because I’ve spent 6 consecutive hours studying it. =_= One in the SUB, two at a review session, and then three on my own. Again. And I still can’t do a lot of the questions. I’m currently slogging my way through the April 2002 exam.

Think of me when I die from physics overload.

I have my first final on Saturday, and I still haven’t started studying yet. Hm. This could be a problem. Oh well, it’s only Tuesday, so I do have a bit of time. And msot problems in organic chemistry can be solved with the use of a handy-dandy model kit. I love my model kit.

On the weekend, I re-discovered a hobby I’d abandoned as soon as I entered high school: Magic: The Gathering. (I’m such a dork. :weird:) I actually still have a surprisingly good grasp of the game, although there were a couple of things my brother and I had to look up on the Internet. How the times have changed. They have a new card design and everything! I feel so… old-school. I don’t think I’ll dive too deeply into it this time, either–I simply haven’t the passion nor the money to construct decks. Besides, the only person I ever play against is my brother. For some reason I get the distinct impression that anyone who plays Magic at my age would be really enthusiastic and have decks composed of expensive and rare cards. Like my brother said, “Building your own deck on a budget is really hard.”

I just noticed that the borders of the WordPress interface have rounded corners. Cool.

Oh, by the way, I found a really cool flash game! ^^ In HK Cafe, you’re a cook at a cafe, where apparently you serve nothing but breakfasty-type items. And apparently you’re too lazy to actually cook proper noodles, so you just use the instant kind. It’s still randomly fun, though. And addictive.

Speaking of randomly fun and addictive games, if working in a restaurant’s not your thing and you’d really rather go back and read some Shakespeare before you start cramming for exams, Tara posted a link to a super-awesome (:star:) Hamlet text-adventure. This thing is lovely, and you’ll never get stuck, because if you do, there are hints! Granted, it might be easy to get lost (I always get lost in text adventure games) but generally, you can find the places you need to go and the things you need to pick up. Talk to people–sometimes you’ll get a funny response. (Ask Ophelia about her lisp )

Hypothetical conversation between new cellmates:

“So, what are you in for?”
“Insider trading, how about you?”
“Spamming.”
“Oh, so it was you who sent me all those–”
Conversation ceases as cellmates begin scuffling. Muffled cries of “not… personal!” and “moron … inbox” are occasionally heard.

One can only hope.

I just found out that a man has been sentenced to nine years in jail for spamming. It’s kind of nice to see spam being taken seriously–when 70% of all emails are spam, that’s a serious and unnecessary drain on resources to the benefit of few and the deteriment of many.

More locally, the spam comments here haven’t really stopped. I estimate there have been several thousand deleted either manually or by Spam Karma since I first noticed the problem. On the plus side, I don’t think any legitimate comments have been sentenced to moderation, and only a few have made it through to be displayed on the blog. :cheerful:

It’s a very long and pointless post about how I came to the conclusion that the Japanese language is really the exception rather than the rule when it comes to naming foreign places. Along the way, meet Chinese cuisine and my arrogance regarding the English language.

Interesting header image, n’est-ce pas?

I don’t know where this French tradition of sticking a fish on a schoolmate’s back came from, but I do find it amusing. We don’t do anything like that in North America. I remember in elementary school, we had a failed attempt to play a ‘trick’ which was actually just the class skipping. As I recall, we headed in not long after–I think we might have gotten bored.

The quick header image change is courtesy of a nifty little tool, Kubrickr, which grabs images from Flickr and converts them into headers. Quick and easy and perfect for slapping a fish on your website for the first day of April. Hum, I might even regularly Kubrickrize this theme. It’s fun looking through all the photos. :cheerful:

And no, you can’t change the theme for today. >D I’m evil like that.

Normally, I’d write this entry in French but I’ve got an in-class essay tomorrow, so I’ll do it in English to save time 😀

I just found out that the author of the novel we’re reading died a month ago. Hmm. Cheerful thought. >_>;;

I also had my last Physics lab EVER today! SCORE! :star: And only five more Physics lectures and a final to go! Woo-hoo! You know, actually, Physics isn’t that bad qualititatively, but once you dump all those equations in there it starts to make no sense.

And I keep using the right-hand rule with my left hand. Do you still wonder why I do poorly?

Ah, there’s nothing that can relieve stress like hitting the mall and shopping and buying things  I should be working on my French presentation, but …

In any case, I finally got a new watch (my father’s been telling me I should buy a new one for a very long time now). It’s from Fossil and came with the most adorable collector’s tin. I wish I had a digital camera so I could post a picture, since I can’t find a similar one on eBay or Google. It’s got some pixelated fish and a submarine, and one of the fish is saying “YOU WIN!” It also comes with a random CD case, but since I don’t have a CD player, it’s er… rather useless.

Toss in a much more sober blazer and a knee-length skirt, and yes, I came home a rather happy camper today.

And index cards! I love index cards!
