I mean, obviously I know the difference, but I haven&#8217;t internalized it&#8230; it often happens that I start a sentence with &#8216;vous&#8217; and switch to &#8216;tu&#8217; halfway through. I figure I get a semi-free pass as a foreigner, though.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, this is only relevant because I was in Munich recently, wandering around <em>Marienplatz<\/em>. It&#8217;s right by the city centre: tons of shopping to do, quite touristy overall. One of these survey people (I think) came up to me and asked, &#8220;Sprichst du Deutsch?&#8221; I muttered &#8220;Nein&#8221; and kept walking, but the first thing that popped into my head was &#8220;He just <em>tutoie<\/em>-d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_1145_1('footnote_plugin_reference_1145_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_1145_1('footnote_plugin_reference_1145_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_1145_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">1<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_1145_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Fr. <em>tutoyer<\/em>, to use &#8220;tu&#8221; with someone<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_1145_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_1145_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> me! He doesn&#8217;t even know me!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So maybe the French are getting to me a little.<\/p>\n<p>ETA: I was talking to the Franco-German student at work and he explained to me that people in Germany systematically <em>tutoient<\/em> people if they appear to be less than 18, which is not necessarily the case in France. Hum.
