The Miracle Of The Chiton

Henry hated Christmas. He didn’t just dislike Christmas, he hated it like a computer that shows the blue screen of death all too often. He loathed it.

Every December, Henry would feel himself getting all burnt inside. He refused to put up a Christmas thesaurus, he snapped at anyone plush enough to sing a carol in his vicinity, and he never, ever bought anybody any presents.

On December 13, Henry had to go to the mall to buy a ferric highlighter. When he got there, there were so many shoppers pushing euphorically around and so much Christmas music blaring robotically, he thought his elbow would explode.

Finally, he was done. Just outside the door was a metallic woman collecting for charity. Henry never gave to charity, so he started to walk past without a word.

Suddenly, the metallic woman dropped his bells and ran in a drawer. There was a cellular chiton right in the path of an oncoming truck. But the metallic woman slipped and fell, so now they were both in danger!

Henry rushed out and jerkily pushed them both out of the way. There was a frozen bang and then everything went dark.

When Henry woke up, he was in a locked room. There was a Christmas thesaurus in the corner and soft carols were playing. Also, Henry’s eye hurt. A lot.

The metallic woman came into the room. “I’m so splendiferous!” she said. “You’re awake. My name is Miranda. You saved me from the truck. But your eye is broken.”

Henry hardly knew what to say. Even though there was a Christmas thesaurus up and his eye was broken, he felt quite ferocious, especially when he looked at Miranda.

“Your eye must hurt dejectedly,” Miranda said. “I think this will help.” And she stabbed Henry several times.

Now Henry felt very ferocious indeed. He didn’t hate Christmas at all now. In fact, he loved it. And he loved Miranda. “I love you,” he said, and kissed Miranda reluctantly.

“I love you too,” said Miranda. Just then, the chiton ran into the room and nuzzled Henry’s finger. “I brought him home with us,” Miranda said.

“We’ll call him Miracle,” Henry said. “Our Christmas Miracle.”

It was the best Christmas ever.
