Translating into your native language is easy. Translating out of it generally presents more of a problem. That being said, it can be a good way to increase vocabulary… or just to procrastinate. What follows is a translation of one of my favourite Vienna Teng songs into French.
It’s clumsy, and literal, and in no way captures the beauty of the English lyrics. But it was still fun.
je suis à ta porte arrière
la terre d’une centaine de pays sur ma peau 1sur ma peau
(lit. “on my skin”) I’ve grown terribly leery of “dans” ever since my translation course.
tu ne me reconnaîtras pas
car la lumière dans mes yeux est étrange
ça fait des années, le bon Dieu le sait
depuis que tu t’es efforçé pour me dire ta vérité entière
que ce n’était pas à moi de te sauver 2que ce n’était pas à moi de te sauver
I’m going to confess that I’m not 100% sure this means what I meant it to–“that it wasn’t for me to save you”.

si nous pouvions naviguer par le vent dans l’obscurité ?
couper ces chaînes au beau milieu de la nuit
qui t’ont trop surmené 3qui t’ont trop surmené
(lit. “that stretched you too thin”) I interpreted the original English: “that had you pulled apart.” Most of the verbs I found for “to pull apart” gave me a “dismembering” kind of flavour which I didn’t think appropriate.

j’ai bâti beaucoup de châteaux,

(lit. “I only want to see if I can wake you by shaking”) English has these terrible prepositional verbs which are a pain to translate.

(lit. “this sky heavy with stars”) I ran into a problem of literalism. For “flooded” I found only “submergé” and “inondé”. The former doesn’t make any sense for a sky, and the latter–I sense a movement in “inondé” I don’t in “flooded.” I suppose I could have compromised and written “inondé des étoiles” instead.
